Last week marked the inauguration of new recreational spaces in Rathcoole and Clondalkin. Local Fine Gael TD for Dublin Mid West Emer Higgins, Councillor Shirley O'Hara and Mayor Alan Edge, attended the opening ceremonies of two new Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs) located in Rathcoole Park and Clondalkin Park.
Funded by The Community Recognition Fund, these projects will bring notable improvements to the community's recreational infrastructure.
Higgins expressed her enthusiasm for these developments, stating, “This is a great addition to our community. Both games areas, funded by The Community Recognition Fund, demonstrate our commitment to enhancing local facilities. I extend my gratitude to South Dublin County Council's Public Realm department, the contractors, and Minister Heather Humphreys for creating this fund.”
In May 2023, Higgins welcomed the announcement of over €3.3 million in funding under the Community Recognition Fund to support local projects. This fund was created as a major government initiative to acknowledge communities that have been instrumental in welcoming Ukrainian refugees and other nationalities into their local areas. The funding aims to support the development of facilities that would be used in the future by all members of the community.
“It was great to see local projects receiving substantial funding with the Community Recognition Fund, with a well-deserved €1.25 million for the villages and €2.1 million for Clondalkin. The local sports teams, clubs, and groups that had been recognised are pillars in our community for sport, recreation, and integration, and these various projects have hugely improved our local facilities,” added Higgins.
Higgins concluded, “The success of these projects, especially the games areas, showcases our commitment to fostering inclusive, active, and connected communities”.
